Awakening historic threads through musical translation (seminar)

For Oxford University’s Trans Global History Seminar I presented the entangling historical threads of: my own family lineage of performers of Romani origin; the lineage of the Lucknow Shahjahanpur Gharana (the music style I was learning from Ustad Irfan Muhammad Khan); and the genealogies of cello, sitar and sarod; as a result of translating what I am taught on sitar to cello. This presentation accompanied a presentation by researcher, performer and master of the mbira, John Pfumojena. Once we had both delivered our presentations we played together in an improvised performance.
