As part of my Arts Council DYCP Grant in 2019, I designed and built – with help from Luthier, Alex Hillairet and from percussionist, Jesse Barrett – a ‘gourd cello’. This combines the neck of a cello with a kalabash body, following a similar design concept to Koras and ngonis. The body differs in that there is not skin covering, but a wooden front. The wooden front of the gourd cello comes from a back of an ex-cello.
