Tartuffe – Royal Shakespeare Company

July 2018 – Feb 2019

Composer, Sarah Sayeed and director, Iqbal Khan, asked me to come on board as a cellist, sitarist and vocalist for the RSC’s new adaption of Tartuffe. The Molière classic is reimagined by writers Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto, to be about a conman posing as a religious leader entering a British Pakistani Muslim family from Small Heath. I devised my parts and performed them live, working as assistant Musical Director, before taking over in the final weeks of the run as Musical Director.

In 2022 the show was remounted with Birmingham REP on a much smaller budget after an earlier cancellation a week prior to lockdown in March 2020. For the remount the music was recorded rather than performed live. I worked as Musical Director during the studio sessions in which we (the original musicians of the show) adapted our parts to work as a recording. The footage below with the recorded material is taken from the BBC filming of this show at the REP.
