Not The Nutcracker

Collaboration between Composer, Pete Yelding and Film Maker, Tom Venner Woodcock.

This piece was about finding joy in the balletic movements of corkscrews. It was titled ‘Not the Nutcracker’ as a hat tip to the popular ballet and because a corkscrew is not a nutcracker! The film is part of the score. The screen is divided into 4, like an N64 multiplayer, Violin I top left, then clockwise, Violin II, Cello, Viola. Performers are given a sheet with musical instructions that match with specific movements of the corkscrew. When those movements occur in their respective section of the screen, they play the corresponding musical instructions. The nutcracker on the string brings new musical instructions. A tape piece unfolds underneath in which reflections on the nutcracker are explained in French and German and a song a about a corkscrew begins to play.
