My final year undergraduate composition portfolio (2012) explored carnivalesque aesthetics. It was the first time I explored in my work my relationship to my heritage as a descendent of Showmen. This orchestral piece, Wheels on the Coach, the ear-worm melody of which was composed on a long coach journey from Germany, stood out as a piece of work from that period worth sharing. It follows a simple theme and variations structure. The melody just repeats and repeats, as it did in my head on that long coach journey. Even when it is just tapped on a bock-a-da-bock, or morphs into a conversation between two laughing trombones, you can hear it!
