I have spent a lot of time reframing and reworking my cello playing. I treat it as a wooden box with strings on it that has come into being as a result of many intersecting musical histories. I have retuned the strings to 2 sets of 4ths an octave apart and have made a strap for the strings to alter the tonic. This allows the techniques and movements associated with playing cello and sitar to blend. It allows me to play modes and intervals that would otherwise be less intuitive on the CGDA tuning. It also means I am not so bound to the Eurocentric notion of notes as named, fixed points on a grid, where deviance from these points ether signifies “a mistake” or “other people’s music” 🙄
